Out of state medications

What to Do When Patients Are Out of California
As a reminder, sending a prescription to a patient who is in a state outside California could be considered practicing medicine in another state and could carry penalties if the doctor is not sufficiently licensed.   Dr. Charlton is licensed ONLY in the state of California

The DEA relies on state licensing boards to determine whether the doctor has authority to dispense, prescribe, or administer controlled substances. This authority is only provided at the state level. Even if a patient is temporarily out-of-state, it’s not allowed for a doctor to call in prescriptions unless licensed in the state in which the patient is located.
If you must have a prescription outside of California, use big box retailers such as CVS so that the prescription can be called into the patient’s local pharmacy in California. The patient can then request that the retailer dispense the RX at a pharmacy location that is more convenient to them.   Dr. Charlton will send your prescription to the California pharmacy of your choice, but you have to take it from there.
